Emergency Alert for Farmers as Trump Responds to Water Shortage; Pressure Mounts on Mexico Over Treaty Dispute
An emergency alert was issued this week for agricultural communities across the Southwest as water levels in key irrigation districts reached critical lows. Farmers in parts of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona were advised to prepare for potential cutbacks after state officials warned of “imminent supply disruptions” tied to ongoing drought conditions and reduced river flows.
Former President Donald Trump weighed in on the situation during a campaign stop, urging federal leaders to take “immediate and forceful action” to protect U.S. farmers. He criticized what he described as “failure to enforce longstanding water agreements” and called for tougher measures to ensure deliveries owed to the United States under the decades-old U.S.–Mexico water treaty.
The 1944 treaty requires Mexico to deliver a set amount of water from the Río Conchos to the Rio Grande over a five-year cycle. In recent years, periods of drought, political disputes, and internal supply challenges have pushed Mexico behind schedule, triggering tensions along the border and concern among American farmers who rely heavily on these flows for irrigation.
State agricultural agencies said they are working with federal authorities to monitor river levels and negotiate short-term relief options. Meanwhile, growers fear that any further interruption during peak planting and harvesting seasons could lead to severe crop losses.
Officials are expected to issue another update later this week as negotiations continue and conditions evolve.
