In a new court filing, US District Court Chief Judge Patrick Schiltz wrote:
“This list should give pause to anyone — no matter his or her political beliefs — who cares about the rule of law.”
Schiltz noted that the court orders involved the detainment of immigrants around Minnesota and Minneapolis as part of US President Donald Trump’s ‘Operation Metro Surge.’
Schiltz also warned that future noncompliance could be met with court orders for government officials and the agency’s acting ICE Director, Todd Lyons, local media reported.
“ICE is not a law unto itself. ICE has every right to challenge the orders of this Court, but, like any litigant, ICE must follow those orders unless and until they are overturned or vacated.”
The court orders Schiltz referred to challenged the legality of individual detentions.
Meanwhile, a plan to bring in ICE’s director for contempt of court proceedings was canceled by the same judge.
