Denmark Rejects Trump’s Proposed “Hospital Boat” Deployment to Greenland
COPENHAGEN — The government of Denmark has officially rejected a proposal attributed to Donald Trump to deploy what he described as a “great hospital boat” to Greenland, stating that the territory does not require foreign medical assistance.
In a brief statement released Friday, Danish officials said Greenland’s healthcare system remains fully operational and capable of meeting the needs of its population. “Greenland manages its own public services, including healthcare, and there is no request or requirement for external medical deployment at this time,” the statement read.
The proposal reportedly involved sending a U.S. hospital ship to the Arctic territory as a gesture of support. However, officials in Copenhagen emphasized that any such move would require coordination with both Danish and Greenlandic authorities. Greenland, while self-governing in most domestic matters, remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark, which oversees foreign and defense policy.
The episode adds to the complex diplomatic history between Washington and Copenhagen regarding Greenland. Interest from the United States in the strategically located Arctic island has surfaced periodically in recent years, reflecting its growing geopolitical importance.
Danish lawmakers across party lines signaled that while they value strong transatlantic ties, unsolicited deployments — even for humanitarian purposes — must respect Greenland’s autonomy and existing institutions.
There has been no indication of further discussions on the matter.
