Angel Reese’s Relationship with “Sex Appeal” Undermines Her Value as an Athlete
Angel Reese, a star in collegiate basketball, has made waves not only for her skill on the court but also for her presence off of it. As one of the most dominant players in women’s college basketball, Reese has led the LSU Tigers to victory and earned numerous accolades.
However, much of the media attention surrounding her has revolved around her appearance, and particularly how she has been marketed in relation to “sex appeal.”
This focus, while seemingly innocent in some cases, often undermines her value as an athlete, reducing her to superficial elements rather than celebrating her athletic prowess.
In today’s sports world, women athletes often face the difficult challenge of balancing their talents with societal expectations of femininity and attractiveness.
Reese is no exception. Her striking looks and confident social media presence have led to her being portrayed not only as an athlete but as an icon of beauty.
While embracing her identity is a personal choice, the way her “sex appeal” is emphasized in media coverage distracts from her skillset and athletic achievements, often overshadowing the very reason she is famous in the first place: her performance on the court.
The media’s focus on Reese’s appearance and sex appeal raises larger questions about the way female athletes are valued.
For male athletes, their performance and physicality dominate discussions, with little attention given to how attractive they are.l
Reese, however, finds herself in a position where the focus is split between her athleticism and her appeal as a public figure. This creates an imbalance, where her worth as an athlete risks being devalued by external pressures to fit into a narrowly defined mold of attractiveness.
By constantly linking her identity to sex appeal, the conversation around Angel Reese shifts from discussions about her determination, work ethic, and achievements to more superficial, often reductive aspects of her persona.
While it is perfectly valid for her to express her individuality and embrace her image, it is equally important that the spotlight on Reese’s athletic accomplishments remains front and center.
The problem is not with Reese herself but with the societal tendency to marginalize women’s achievements by reducing them to physical attributes.
For Reese to be seen as more than a “pretty face” or a product of a “marketable image,” there needs to be a shift in how female athletes are portrayed.
Her athletic abilities, leadership, and contributions to the sport should remain the main focus, with her “sex appeal” acknowledged without overshadowing her talent.
In the end, Angel Reese deserves to be celebrated as the powerful athlete she is, not defined solely by the lens of beauty standards.
It’s time for society to start recognizing women athletes for their hard work, talent, and accomplishments, and move beyond a narrow, superficial narrative.
