AOC sounded absolutely presidential at a major security conference in Germany, where our European allies gathered to discuss global geopolitics and how to respond to Trump’s reckless threats against Greenland.

At the conference, the progressive Democrat sharply laid out how billionaires, monopolies, and the unchecked greed of the oligarch class are destabilizing democracies.

“You know, I think one of the connections and relationships that is under discussed, particularly in the security space, is the fact that I believe we’re seeing in economy, across economy around the world, including the United States, that extreme levels of income inequality lead to social instability and drives, in a sense, in authoritarianism, right-wing populism, and very dangerous domestic internal politics.”

“And that is a direct outcome of not just income inequality, but the failure of democracies over decades to deliver, the failure to deliver higher wages, the failure to rein in corporations. The point was just made about antitrust. The United States antitrust tradition is such a foundational bedrock value, not just because the rise of monopolies creates corporate abuse of power and market dominance, but there is a level of market concentration and corporate consolidation where a massive company can grow so large that its consolidated power can rival that of nation states.”

“In democracies, we have elected leaders, and in massive corporations that begin to consume the public sector and swallow up public spending, they start calling the shots. And we’re beginning to see this with members of the billionaire class flexing their influence in domestic politics and in global affairs as well. So it is an urgent priority that we get our economic houses in order and deliver tangible gains for working people or else we will descend into a more isolated world ruled by authoritarians who also fail to deliver for workers.”

“They are aiming to pull the U.S. back from the global stage so that we enter an era of authoritarians carving up the map — where Donald Trump can dominate the Western Hemisphere and Latin America as his personal playground, where Putin can rattle sabers across Europe and intimidate our allies, and where strongmen effectively control their own regional spheres.”

“It is our global alliances that can act as a firm barrier against authoritarian consolidation of power, especially when it comes to installing regional puppet regimes.”

WOW. Can you imagine a Republican articulating ideas like this with such clarity and force? They try to reduce AOC to “just a bartender” and a “dumb socialist,” but she is clearly far more capable than many of the slack-jawed extremists voters in Texas keep sending to Congress.
