BREAKING: Chiefs urged to reunite with three-time Pro Bowler Marcus Peters mid-season to address ‘biggest weakness’ More details here
Another magical season appears to be taking shape for the Kansas City Chiefs.
After winning a heart-stopper on Sunday via a Leo Chenal blocked field goal, the two-time defending champion Chiefs are 9-0. Not only are they chasing a third straight Lombardi Trophy, something no team has ever accomplished, but they could be chasing a perfect regular season.
After shoring up some of their weaknesses at the trade deadline, most notably wide receiver with the acquisition of DeAndre Hopkins, the Chiefs roster looks mostly solid. But cornerback appears to be the one noteworthy exception, with starter Jaylen Watson sidelined with a fractured ankle.
Perhaps the solution for the Chiefs could be to reunite with an old friend–and a highly decorated one at that. Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department proposed on Monday that the Chiefs could sign veteran free agent Marcus Peters to address the void left by Watson at corner.
“The Chiefs have to be considered major winners of the NFL trade deadline. DeAndre Hopkins is already making a huge difference and Josh Uche strengthens the pass rush by giving them another threat on the outside,” the authors said. “The only major need that went unaddressed is the lack of cornerback depth.”
“The Chiefs are going to need cornerbacks not named Trent McDuffie to play well for the team to threepeat as Super Bowl champs. Marcus Peters did not look good for the Raiders last season, but Peters spent the first three years of his career in Kansas City. Playing for a contender could give him just a little more life as he finishes out his career.”
At age 31, Peters is by no means washed up, even if his 2023 season was a disappointment on the field. He’s long been known as a big-play specialist, with 33 career interceptions, and the Chiefs could use a few of those big plays to help them out down the stretch.
