Harrison Butker gave a commencement speech at Benedictine College, a private college in Atchison, Kansas. The three-time Super Bowl champion made homophobic, antisemitic and misogynistic comments, even telling women at the graduation ceremony to be “homemakers”, via US Weekly:
My favorite part of this whole Butker is entitled to his opinion argument? Others aren’t on different viewpoints or political stances that don’t align with yours. You all see the hypocrisy right? I believe in freedom of speech and disagree with his linear take. Both can exist
Butker has received immense backlash over his comments. There is an online petition (currently over 61,000 signatures) for the Chiefs to “dismiss” the veteran kicker over the comments that were made.
As of midnight on Thursday, the Chiefs have not addressed Butker’s comments.
The 28-year-old Harrison Butker began his NFL career with the Chiefs in 2017 following a brief stint on the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. The Georgia Tech product has been a member of all three Kansas City Super Bowl championship teams in the Patrick Mahomes-Andy Reid era.
Butker has developed a reputation as one of the most clutch kickers in NFL history, making game-winning field goals at the end of the 2022 AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl 57. He also made a game-tying 49-yard attempt at the end of the 2021 AFC Divisional Round against the Buffalo Bills, helping KC to a 42-36 overtime victory.
For his career, Butker has a field goal percentage of 89.1 and an extra point success rate of 94.5.
Expect A Response From The Chiefs On Harrison Butker
Even if the Kansas City Chiefs decide not to release Butker, the organization will likely address his comments soon.
Butker’s comments were offensive and harmful to many, and the Chiefs won’t want more unnecessary public backlash that could have easily been avoided. So in the coming days, expect the reigning champions to break their silence on Butker’s comments.
