According to multiple reports, during those briefings the FBI shared classified information not about the nominees—but about Trump himself. Information so serious that each nominee independently decided they could not serve.
The FBI reportedly warned them that Trump is the subject of ongoing criminal and counterintelligence investigations involving foreign money, classified information leaks, and unauthorized communications with foreign officials. Investigators allegedly told nominees that serving in Trump’s cabinet—while knowing this information—could expose them to personal criminal liability.
That warning was enough. One by one, they withdrew, all citing the same vague phrase: “unforeseen personal circumstances.”
This is unprecedented. FBI briefings normally focus on the nominee—not the president. The fact that investigators felt compelled to warn cabinet picks suggests they believe Trump himself poses a serious legal and national security risk.
