President Donald Trump sharply criticized Oklahoma Gov. J. Kevin Stitt (R) after Stitt announced that the bipartisan National Governors Association (NGA) would not take part in a White House event that excluded some Democratic governors.
Stitt, who currently serves as chair of the NGA, said the organization would decline the invitation in order to preserve its longstanding bipartisan tradition. The NGA, which represents governors from both major political parties, has historically emphasized cooperation across party lines on issues such as infrastructure, disaster response and economic development.
In a statement explaining the decision, Stitt said the association works best when it brings together leaders from across the political spectrum and that participating in events perceived as partisan could undermine that mission. He did not criticize the White House directly but stressed the importance of inclusivity within the organization.
Trump responded forcefully, accusing Stitt of failing to support his administration and arguing that the White House had the right to structure its events as it saw fit. The president suggested that the decision reflected political pressure from Democrats and called it a missed opportunity for governors to engage with federal officials on key policy priorities.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between the White House and some state leaders, even within the president’s own party. While Republican governors have often aligned with Trump on issues such as immigration and federal regulations, differences have occasionally surfaced over tone, strategy and bipartisan engagement.
Despite the disagreement, both sides indicated they would continue working together on shared policy goals. The episode underscores the delicate balance governors must strike between maintaining bipartisan relationships and navigating national political dynamics.
