Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says at least 55,000 soldiers have died during fighting four years on from the start of Russia’s invasion, up from the 46,000 troops he said had been killed in early 2025.

During an interview with French TV channel France 2 on Wednesday, Zelenskyy added that Ukraine has listed “a large number of people” as missing in the war.

In January, The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a U.S. think tank, gave a much higher figure of troop deaths, estimating that up to 140,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed through the end of last year.
